How To – Auto into 81 Ford P/U

I want to swap an c-4 transmission into my 81 Ford Pickup with 300 6
cylinder. What all will I have to change?

Tell us what trans you have now for a more specific response.

It has a 3 speed with overdrive standard. The tag on the transmission
has the letters RUG stamped on it. If you need more info I can look
    under the truck again.

A C-6 is a better choice. Get everything out of a wrecked truck rather than one
    piece at a time.

As lmanus stated the C6 is a stronger trans, but not always better depending
on your aplication. You will find C6s bolted up to 300s in alot of Econoline
    vans.
Most F 100s and 150s with 300s had the heavy duty C4 — look for the
dipstick tube that goes all the way down into the side of the transmission pan,
and the letter ‘H’ on the servo cover on the r/h side of the trans.
To do a neat swap you really need to find an automatic equiped truck to get
parts from. The radiator has a cooler in it for the ATF, the steering column
has the gear selector stuff, the starter motor has a slightly different snout
on it, the flywheel and block plate are different [ and must be from a 300 six
for balance ]. And the slip yoke may be different too.
Other than that and a case of beer it’s really no major deal, good luck.
